I have been asked frequently about why the name South China Martial Arts Alliance was selected for our organization. The name originated as a result of the extraordinary efforts of Hanshi George E. Mattson while promoting Uechi-ryu internationally over the last fifty plus years. Hanshi Mattson recognized the need for the formation of a martial arts organization for martial artists who were not Uechi-ryu stylists and could not join IUKF (International Uechi-ryu Karate Federation) and benefit from its services.
In 1996, Hanshi Mattson was appointed Chief Consultant of Wushu for the New York United Fuzhou Friendship Society. In this position, he created the South China Martial Alliance to provide legitimate services to organizations, schools and individuals whose martial art system had roots in Southern China.
To this end, Hanshi Mattson recently put together a group of martial artists to formalize the structure of this organization to serve this martial arts community. Putting together a martial arts organization is a difficult task at best. The SCMAA Board of Directors will continue to work for the improvement of services available to its membership and welcomes membership input to accomplish this task.
